VMware complements cloud management with automation tool

VMware has unveiled yesterday at the House conference VMworld Europe 2012 in Barcelona an update of the vCloud Suite. In order for the virtualization, the specialist is expanding its introduced in August cloud management portfolio. In addition to improvements of the individual products, the suite offers a completely new module with the vCloud Automation Center 5.1.

The enhancements are designed to simplify the management of physical and virtual environments and automate. With the software components that are suitable for the management of hybrid and heterogeneous clouds, VMware is driving the concept of “Software Defined Data Center” further progress.

At the core of this concept summarizes the provider in two sentences together: “The whole infrastructure is virtualized and delivered as a service. The control of the data center is fully automated through software. “In addition to the cloud service provisioning, automated delivery of IT as a service, the management approach includes the disciplines Cloud Operations Management and Cloud Business Management. “Our vision is to develop the operating system for the data center,” said Pat Gelsinger, the new CEO of VMware.

Building Cloud Infrastructures

The vCloud Suite contains all the components, according to VMware customers need to build cloud infrastructure to operate and manage. With the update, the manufacturer presents further developed and new management components.

The new vCloud Automation Center 5.1 to help customers to control automates the delivery of IT services. The technology comes from the start-up DynamicOps, which VMware acquired in July. It enables policy-based provisioning of services from private and public clouds. Multiple hypervisors are supported, as purely physical infrastructure or services from the Amazon cloud. Authorized administrators, developers, and business users can request IT services through a self-service portal or manage existing resources more.

Blueprints for applications

The component vFabric Application Director is to accelerate the development of multi-tier applications and their deployment in different clouds. Serve so-called blueprints with standardized, pre-approved operating system and middleware components. With the update to version 5.0, VMware extends the application support all Microsoft applications (including Exchange, SQL Server, SharePoint) and custom applications.

The vCenter Operations Management Suite supports an integrated performance, capacity and configuration management with patented analysis methods. These procedures are intended to provide the information administrators, based on which they can meet service levels in hybrid cloud environments proactively. In version 5.6 of the suite can be open additional tables for the Operations Dashboard, to help customers in bringing their IT in accordance with policies, security policies, and regulatory requirements.

Extension of the data center limits

VCloud Connector serves the transfer of virtual machines and applications between private and public clouds based on VMware technology. Thus the logical limits should be the extended data center. Among other things, workloads can be moved to without reconfiguring networks and other settings in version 2.0 of the product.

Cost and quality of cloud services

In parallel with the expansion of the vCloud Suite announces VMware to update the IT Business Management Suite. It is to give customers visibility into cost, quality, and value of their cloud services. In version 7.5, VMware has expanded the suite to an IT benchmarking module that has more than 3,500 measurements of 18 areas. The suite also offers the IT finance management improvements by further automated budget processes and tightens.
